Ice Climbing

Norway's Mountain and Paddle School offers several exciting ice climbing opportunities, mostly based in Rjukan, Norway. Making with most of Norway's world class venue we can create a tailor made course to suit your experience and requirements. As a basic guide we offer the following courses:

 

Introduction Session (3 hours)                 Beginner Weekend Course (16 hours)                  Refresher Course (1 day)

Ice Blaster Weekend (2 days)                    Zero to Hero (1 week)

 

Introduction Session (3 hours)

Have a go with crampons and ice axes.

Beginners Weekend Course (16 hours)

We'll meet you in Rjukan on Friday evening, with two full days ice climbing on Saturday and Sunday. We will introduce you to ice climbing and help you to develop the skills you need to scale the fantastic frozen waterfalls that Rjukan has to offer. Specialist equipment provided. Refresher (1day)

Refresh, develop and improve your climbing skills and confidence on the ice. Designed to take your climbing up a notch and prepare you for an extended trip to Norway.

Ice Blaster Weekend (2 days)

Specially designed to meet the needs of those flying in for a quick weekend this course is tailored to meet your individual needs. The package includes transport to and from Oslo's Sandefjord Torp airport.

Maximum Group Size: 3

Location: Rjukan, although venues en-route may be used to maximise your time on the ice.

When: December to March depending on conditions.

Zero to Hero (1 week)

Arrive as a beginner, leave as a full functioning, self assured ice climber. Groups may be combined in order to run the course.

Full Day Ice Climbing in Local Venue

Top rope climbing for entire group with focus on getting into the swing of it and developing good movement techniques.

4.00 pm Return to hostel at dark for sauna and socializing.

Sunday  9.00am – 3.15pm

9.00 am Leave hostel

Full day ice climbing building on yesterday.

Ice Screw Placement, Building belays, moving forward.

3.00pm Debrief and finish.

 

Brief Ice Climbingn Beginners Course Equipment List;

Norwegian Mountain and Paddle School will provide; (although you are welcome to bring your own)

For each individual; Crampons Harness Ice Axes Helmet Belay devices and other required technical equipment

Group Equipment; Rope Ice Screws Quick-draws Other Safety Equipment.

You must bring with you;

Winter Boots (if you do not own a pair I suggest you ask around as these are expensive to rent in Norway although I have a few pairs I can lend out – ask me before you come).

Warm Clothes (at least 2 layers on the legs and 3 on the body of fleece or merino)

Waterproof Clothes (Trousers and Top)

At least 2 pairs of gloves (waterproof if possible)

Hat

EXPECT TEMPERATURES OF -10 to -20 DEGREES CELSIUS!

 

Other suggested items;

Sheet sleeping bag and sleeping bag  to reduce hostel bill.

Snacks and chocolate

Any alcohol you may want
